R.I.P. Les Weatherhead

Spokane lost a really good one when Leslie “Les” Weatherhead died on May 9. My deep, sincere condolences to the Weatherhead family for their loss.

In the business world and in the courtroom, Les was a tough competitor and strong advocate. He was well prepared, intelligent and relentless in his practice of law. Given a choice, you wanted him in your corner, not your opponent’s.

Les was an unapologetic, enthusiastic Oregon Duck alumni, not an easy choice in a land full of Cougars, Zags, Eagles and Huskies. He loved those Ducks.

Not quite so apparent was Les’s big heart for causes big and small. My daughter and his daughter shared a love for theater, finding success with Lewis & Clark Tiger Drama. When this respected program needed a little outside help, Les helped create a parent support group, S.T.A.G.E., using his legal expertise, leadership and seemingly boundless energy to strengthen LC Drama, and the local arts community.

I got to know Les during this time, and found him engaging, authentic, curious, passionate and fully present. I saw firsthand how much he loved his family, his profession, his community, and yes, those Ducks.

Thank you, Les, and rest in peace.
