DeSales captures 2B softball regional title

DeSales defeated Dayton 4-1 to win the 2B softball regional title at Merkel Complex on Tuesday.

Madison Mings had a solo home run to account for Dayton’s lone run.

DeSales earned the No. 1 seed to state – which will take place at Yakima’s Gateway Sports Complex – and will open against Onalaska at 9 a.m. on Friday. Second-seeded Dayton will play Pe Ell/Willapa Valley at 11 a.m. on Friday.

In other games at Merkel, Kettle Falls defeated Asotin 4-2 in a battle for the third and fourth seeds to state. Kettle Falls will open against Brewster on Friday at 9 a.m., while Asotin begins with a matchup against Adna at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Springdale edged Colfax 4-3 in a game to decide the fifth and sixth seeds to state.

Springdale will open on Friday against Toutle Lake at 9 a.m., while Colfax kicks off the tournament against Warden at 11 a.m.

In earlier games, Springdale eliminated Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 12-2 and Colfax ousted Northwest Christian 8-7.

Women’s golf

Kersten, Stanford chasing title

Stanford freshman Sierra Kersten, a Lewis and Clark graduate, won her match 4&2 over Duke’s Celine Boutier to help the second-seeded Cardinal advance to the NCAA championship at the Eugene Country Club.

Stanford edged Duke 3-2, setting up the title match against fourth-seeded Washington, a 3-1-1 winner over top-seeded UCLA.

Kersten earlier lost 1-up to South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh but Stanford won the quarterfinal match 3-2.

College baseball

The Washington State Cougars’ nonconference game against the Washington Huskies in Yakima was canceled due to an unplayable field. It will not be made up.
