Gonzaga’s Jeff Bohling the WCC player of the year; four Zags on first team

The Gonzaga baseball team placed seven players on All-West Coast Conference teams Tuesday, including the WCC Player of the Year, junior Jeff Bohling.

Bohling started all 50 games, batted .301 and had a slugging percentage of .367. He ranked among the conference’s Top 10 in multiple offensive categories. He is second with 21 doubles, tied for second with four triples, fourth in total bases (115), fifth in runs scored (45), and sixth in slugging (.532). The infielder has doubled career highs in every offensive category this season, including a team-best seven home runs and 10 stolen bases.

Four Zags earned spots on the conference’s first team, more than any other school. Joining Bohling is junior Brandon Bailey and sophomores Tyler Frost and Eli Morgan. Bailey and Morgan served as the Zags’ 1-2 starting punch all year, and the pair have yet to each lose during the same weekend. Bailey has an 8-3 record with a 2.45 ERA. He has 104 strikeouts, the second-most in the WCC and currently seventh-most in program history. Morgan is 10-1 with a 3.14 ERA and 95 strikeouts. He is 8-0 in WCC starts with 71 Ks.

Frost leads the team and is tied for third in the WCC with 46 RBIs. He tops the team with 10 multi-RBI games and is tied for second with 20 multi-hit efforts.

Senior infielder Taylor Jones made the secnd team and junior second baseman Justin Jacobs made the honorable mention list. Redshirt freshman Jace VanDeBrake was voted to the all-freshman team.

Pepperdine’s A.J. Puckett won pitcher of the year, BYU’s Keaton Kringlen is the freshman of the year, San Francisco’s Nico Giarratano is the defensive player of the year, and Saint Mary’s head coach Eric Valenzuela is the coach of the year.
