Newsmakers: Illinois dismisses Nunn

Dismissed Illinois on Tuesday dismissed junior guard Kendrick Nunn from the basketball team following his guilty plea to misdemeanor domestic battery.

Withdrawn Washington State’s Josh Hawkinson, Ike Iroegbu and Conor Clifford have withdrawn their names from consideration for the NBA draft and will return for their senior seasons. Purdue junior forward Vincent Edwards has decided not to pursue the NBA for now. UConn center Amida Brimah and guard Rodney Purvis have withdrawn their names from the list of under- classmen eligible for the NBA Draft. Nominated Five first-time nominees will be among those considered for induction into the NASCAR Hall Fame during Wednesday’s voting for the Class of 2017.

The first timers include: team owner Jack Roush, drivers Ricky Rudd and Ron Hornaday, engine builder Waddell Wilson and broadcaster Ken Squier.

Removed Drag racing legend Shirley Muldowney is having surgery to remove a cancerous lung. The 75-year-old Muldowney will have the five-hour procedure in Charlotte.

Hired Vanderbilt hired Stephanie White of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever as its women’s basketball coach. White, the first rookie coach to lead her team to the WNBA Finals last year, will finish out this season with the Fever, whose season just began this month. Kentucky coach Matthew Mitchell has hired Hall of Fame coach Lin Dunn, completing an overhaul of his staff after the departures of several assistants since the end of last season.

Signed The Liberty re-signed veteran Swin Cash 10 days after cutting her for salary cap reasons. The forward was released before the season started to save salary cap space, and the team waited the minimum time required by league rules before signing her on.

Reported Ten medalists from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including 2012 high jump champion Anna Chicherova, were among 14 Russians that tested positive in the reanalysis of their doping samples according to state television.

Awarded TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager will receive the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYS on July 13.

Transferred Auburn defensive back Tim Irvin is transferring to another school. The nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, Irvin played in 10 games as a freshman last season.
