College baseball: Tyler Frost’s home run in 10th inning gives Gonzaga shot at WCC Championship

Tyler Frost’s one-out homer to right field in the 10th inning Friday gave Gonzaga a 5-4 victory over Pepperdine in a loser-out game of the West Coast Conference Championships in Stockton, California.

The Bulldogs (35-18) will meet Saint Mary’s (32-23) in Saturday’s championship round. GU will have to win twice to take the championship.

The Bulldogs were two outs away from the late-night win when Brad Anderson hit a one-out, two-run homer off Wyatt Mills.

Mills (2-1) rebounded to work a perfect 10th, setting up Frost’s heroics.

Frost also hit a solo homer in the sixth for a 3-2 Bulldogs lead. Sam Brown’s solo homer in the fifth allowed GU to tie the game at 2.

Gonzaga began the day with a 13-4 loss to Saint Mary’s after leading 3-2 through five innings. Ian McLoughlin’s grand slam highlighted the Gaels’ six-run sixth.

Chris Baker’s run-scoring triple in the ninth inning allowed the Washington Huskies to tie for first place in the Pac-12 Conference with a 5-4 victory over Utah in Salt Lake City.

Baker’s triple to right field scored Jack Meggs, who singled with one out off Dylan Drachler (3-4).

UW’s Greg Minier, Alex Nesbitt (2-1) and Ryan Schmitten (second save) combined for 3 1/3 innings with no earned runs.

Washington (32-19 overall) and Utah (23-27) are tied for first place at 17-11. They’ll close the regular season by finishing off the three-game series Saturday and Sunday.

Stefan Van Horn’s two-out, three-run double in the fifth lifted Washington State (19-33, 11-17 Pac-12) to a 4-1 victory over California (30-21, 12-16) to open a three-game, season-ending series.

WSU starter Damon Jones (2-2) worked a season-high 5 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Whitworth junior Garrett Hughes was named American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division III gold glove winner at second base, the school announced.

Pirates senior Jeremy Druffel was tabbed an honorable mention All-American by D3baseball.com.

Hughes had a fielding percentage of .995 in 40 games, making one error in 207 defensive chances. Druffel finished the season hitting .383 with 48 runs and 29 RBIs.
