College track and field: Katie Knight, Kinsey Gomez place highly in women’s 10,000 at regional

Washington’s Katie Knight placed third and Idaho’s Kinsey Gomez took fourth in the women’s 10,000 meters during Friday’s second day of the NCAA West Regional outdoor track and field meet in Lawrence, Kansas.

Knight, a junior from North Central High, finished in 34 minutes, 22.87 seconds while Gomez, a senior from Coeur d’Alene High, ran 34:24.97. Winner Dominique Scott of Arkansas ran 34:20.35.

Also for the Huskies: senior Baylee Mires (Mead High) ran 2:05.72 to place fifth in the women’s 800; senior Carson Fuller (Ferris High) placed 10th in men’s javelin at 224 feet, 10 inches; and sophomore Andrew Gardner (Mead) was 10th in the men’s steeplechase at 8:47.92.

Washington State junior CJ Allen, the reigning Pac-12 champion, qualified for the national semifinals in the men’s 400 hurdles with a time of 50.77, the second fastest of the quarterfinals.

Cougars junior Liz Harper cleared 5-9 1/4 in the women’s high jump to qualify for nationals.

Gonzaga junior Shelby Mills qualified for the women’s 3,000 steeplechase national semifinals by logging the eighth-best time (10:09.76) in preliminaries. The semifinals are June 9 in Eugene.

Idaho’s Arphaxad Carroll placed 11th in the men’s long jump at 24-8 1/2, qualifying for nationals.

All seven Eastern Washington athletes had their seasons come to an end.

Whitworth senior Corey Burt achieved a career best while placing second in the men’s shot put during the second day of the NCAA Division III Championships in Waverly, Iowa.

Burt tossed the shot 58-10 on his fifth attempt to trail only Alex Mess of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (59-7 1/2).

Burt entered the meet as the top seed with a career-best 58-3 1/4. The eight points he scored put the Pirates in seventh place with 12 points heading into Saturday’s final day.

Whitworth’s Katie McKay ran 2:10.98 in the women’s 800 and just missed qualifying for the final. Whitworth’s Kayla Brase placed 20th in the heptathlon with 4,047 points.
