Here’s what was going on in the Inland Northwest the last time the Cubs won the World Series:

  • The front page of The Spokesman-Review was consumed with news about the presidential election that would take place the next day, pitting Republican William Howard Taft against Democrat William Jennings Bryan. (Taft won).
  • The Spokesman-Review announced it would use a stereopticon to project election returns on a large curtain hung from a downtown building, beginning at 6 p.m. on election day.
  • A “masked highwayman with a big revolver” robbed Mr. S.M. Swartley as he walked his girlfriend home from a night at the theater. Swartley escorted her safely home before alerting the police.
  • The newspaper editorialized in favor of the creation of a city hospital – a public hospital – “where treatment shall be free to all who cannot pay.”
  • A story advised that diet and exercise would help women lose weight. Recommended exercises included rolling, said to be the favorite of “one American actress famous for her beauty,” who regularly donned a kimono and rolled on the floor “over and over for half an hour or so.”
  • Spokane Police officer Chester Edwards and Detective Alex MacDonald were in Everett to testify at a murder trial, and while there, helped local police catch two notorious safe-blowers. The Spokane police were standing on the street talking to Everett’s police chief and noticed two men walking by carrying suitcases. They advised the chief to stop the men and look inside, because they were sure the cases contained safe-cracking tools. They did, plus dynamite and fuses.
