Prep roundup: Bullpups upset Panthers in 4A regional loser-out girls soccer match

Mia Payton and Trudi Thompson scored second-half goals to propel the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (12-6) to a 2-0 victory over the Mead Panthers (16-2) in a 4A regional loser-out girls soccer match on Thursday.

Payton broke up a scoreless duel when she found the net in the 52nd minute and Thompson added an insurance goal with 3 mintues remaining in the match.

With the victory, the Bullpups advance to a winner-to-state, loser-out match on the road against Hanford or Chiawana on Saturday.

Amber Hickman scored 7 minutes into overtime to lift the Mt. Spokane Wildcats to a 1-0 victory over the Kamiakin Braves in a 3A bi-district loser-out match in Kennewick.

Mt. Spokane keeper Anna Boyer preserved the shutout by making seven saves.

The Wildcats move on to play at Mercer Island High on Saturday in a glue-in match for a No. 2 seed in the state tournament.

Mt. Spokane avenged a 5-1 loss to Kamiakin just last week.

Boys soccer

Cade Peplinski and Dan Rigsby scored first-half goals 4 minutes apart – with Oscar Angell picking up assists on both scores – to propel the St. George’s Dragons to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Northwest Christian Crusaders in a 2B/1B loser-out match.

Mitchell Ward put the game out of reach with a goal in the 73rd minute for the Dragons.

Football

Johnny Via carried the ball 20 times for 226 yards and a pair of touchdowns to propel the Ferris Saxons to a 28-21 crossover victory over the Hanford Falcons at Joe Albi Stadium.

Via opened the scoring for the Saxons with a 66-yard TD burst in the first quarter and added a 67-yard scamper for the victory-clinching score in the fourth quarter.

Desmond McKinnon’s interception return for a TD gave the Saxons a 21-14 lead in the third quarter.

Hunter Gregerson and Terrell Sanders combined to rush for 299 yards and the University Titans steamrolled the Pasco Bulldogs 48-6 in a crossover game at U-Hi.

Gregerson carried 11 times for 182 yards, including a 79-yard TD run in the first quarter, and Sanders added 117 yards on 16 totes with two TDs.

The Kennewick Lions dominated from start to finish en route to a 48-14 crossover romp over the Lewis and Clark Tigers at Lampson Field in Kennewick.

The Mead Panthers took a trip to Walla Walla and walloped the Warriors to the tune of 72-41 in a crossover game.

Volleyball

Miahna Waters notched a match-high 17 kills and Katie Rhodes added four blocks to lead the Mt. Spokane Wildcats to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 sweep over the Shadle Park Highlanders in a 3A bi-district match at Mt. Spokane High.

The victory gives the Wildcats the Greater Spokane League’s No. 1 seed. Mt. Spokane will host the KingCo’s seventh-place team on Tuesday for a spot in the State 3A tournament.

Shadle Park will play the winner of a Southridge-Kamiakin tilt in a loser-out match on Saturday.

Odessa-Harrington swept its way to the District 7 1B championship match with 3-0 victories over Inchelium and Selkirk in Selkirk.

Selkirk opened play with a sweep of Wellpinit. Inchelium posted a 3-1 win over Wellpinit.

Almira-Coulee/Hartline breezed to a 3-0 sweep over visiting Valley Christian to advance to the district championship match on Saturday at 3 p.m.

ACH swept Northport en route to the semifinals.

Republic eliminated Northport 3-1 before falling to Valley Christian 3-2.
