Spokane Symphony expands experience with Intersect

We’re now in the thick of Spokane Symphony season, with new concerts happening seemingly every week. On Friday, the symphony premieres a new concert series called Intersect, which will take a culturally themed orchestral program and meld it with relevant art, cuisine and history.

In the case of Friday night’s show, the focus will be on China. Before the evening’s concert begins, the lobby of the Fox Theater will be filled with folk dancers from the Spokane Chinese Dance Group, as well as harpists and calligraphers, and traditional Chinese brush paintings will be on display.

Local chef Jeremy Hansen will also be on hand to prepare an authentic Chinese food menu, and a three course tasting will run you $15.

As for the music, the symphony, under Eckart Preu’s direction, will perform a trio of pieces by contemporary Chinese composers Chou Wen-chung, Chen Yi and Zhou Tian. The night will close with a performance of Mozart’s 41st and final symphony.

Festivities start at 6 p.m., and the concert starts at 8 p.m.

Two more Intersect concerts are already scheduled, including a Russian showcase in January and a March program focused on the tango.
