State 1A/2B/1B volleyball: Lakeside, Freeman will meet in semifinals

YAKIMA – Safely tucked away in the lower half of the bracket and away from presumed titans Lynden Christian and Cascade, Freeman and Lakeside advanced to the semifinals with two wins each in the State 1A volleyball state tournament Friday in the SunDome.

The teams will face each other for the fourth time this season at 1 p.m. Saturday with a championship match berth on the line.

Lakeside, the District 6/7 1A champion and the only team to beat Freeman this year, advanced with sweeps over Kiona Benton and Annie Wright.

“I thought we played better tonight than the first match and I was really impressed with our defense,” Lakeside coach Kara Moffatt said after the second win. “We were just picking up everything.”

Freeman, the No. 3 entrant from the District 6/7 combo grouping and the only team to beat Lakeside, swept Naches Valley and Cedar Park Christian.

The winner of their match will play Lynden Christian or Granger in the finals at 7 p.m.

State 2B

The Colfax juggernaut was knocked into the consolation bracket by Mossyrock, which won the quarterfinal match 25-20, 19-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13.

Colfax dispatched Life Christian Academy 3-0 in the opener.

The Bulldogs will face either Davenport or Napavine in the consolation round at 11 a.m. Saturday. A win is needed to get the Bulldogs into a trophy game.

Davenport opened play with a 3-1 win over Kittitas and was playing Napavine in a quarterfinal that started more than an hour late. The match was still underway at press time.

Northwest Christian dropped its opener to Dayton 3-1 and was eliminated by Toutle Lake 3-0.

Wilbur-Creston knocked off Manson 3-1 in its opener and was knocked into the consolation bracket by Kalama 3-0. The Wildcats will play either Dayton or La Conner, who were playing another late quarterfinal at press time.

State 1B

Defending champion Oakesdale advanced to the the semifinals with two quick wins, sweeping Neah Bay and Pateros.

Oakesdale will play Almira/Coulee-Hartline in the semifinals at 1 p.m Saturday.

Odessa-Harrington split two matches, losing to Quilcene 3-1 before advancing in the consolation bracket with a 3-1 win over Lake Quinault.

The Titans will play Naselle in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m.

Valley Christian also split, losing to Pateros 3-0 and knocking off Neah Bay 3-0 to advance in consolation play.

The Panthers will play Rainier Christian in the consolation bracket at 9 a.m.

ACH beat Rainier Christian 3-1 and advanced to the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Three Rivers Christian.
