Women’s Top 25 roundup: DeShields leads No. 13 Tennessee women over ETSU 83-58

Diamond DeShields had 28 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to lead No. 13 Tennessee to an 83-58 win over ETSU on Tuesday night in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Mercedes Russell added 15 for the Lady Vols (3-0), whose first appearance in Johnson City since 1981 drew an ETSU record 6,072 fans.

DeShields hit three 3-pointers and 8 of 12 shots overall as Tennessee shot 58 percent in the first half to take a 46-27 lead.

The Lady Vols finished at 56 percent despite making 6 of 17 3s after coming in 22 of 39 (56 percent) behind the arc. The biggest lead was 28 points in the third quarter.

Micah Norris had 13 points and Tianna Tarter 12 for the Buccaneers (1-1). ETSU shot just 31 percent and was outrebounded 40-30 as Tennessee had a 50-22 advantage on points in the paint.

(21) West Virginia 95, Howard 49: Tynice Martin hit all 10 of her free throws and scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Mountainwwe (2-0) to a win over the Bison (0-2) in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Chania Ray also had a career best with 17 points as the Mountaineers were never challenged by the Bison.

West Virginia led 39-20 at the half and then scored 32 points in the third quarter, two shy of matching the team record for a quarter. The Mountaineers made 11 of 17 shots, including all four 3-pointers, to push the lead to 71-38.

Lanay Montgomery grabbed 13 rebounds, climbing to 11th on the school career list with 653, as West Virginia had a 48-28 advantage.

Te’Shya Heslip scored 25 points for Howard, which shot just 32 percent and had 27 turnovers that West Virginia turned into 34 points.
