Blue-green algae advisory issued for Cocolalla Lake

From staff reports

A blue-green algae advisory has been issued for Cocolalla Lake by the Panhandle Health District and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality.

The algae blooms have the potential to produce harmful toxins.

People recreating at Cocolalla Lake should avoid swallowing or inhaling lake water and avoid areas of the lake with visible scum on the water. Pets also should be kept out of the water.

If people choose to eat fish from the lake, they should remove all fat, skin and organs, where toxins are more likely to collect.

Symptoms of exposure to algal toxins can include rashes, hives, diarrhea, vomiting, coughing and wheezing. More severe symptoms affecting the liver and nervous system may result from swallowing water.

Idaho DEQ is working with local landowners to implement nutrient reduction projects to improve overall water quality and limit the frequency and duration of the blooms.
