Morris scores 20, No. 21 Iowa State tops Indiana State 73-71

College basketball: Monte Morris scored 20 points and No. 21 Iowa State took the lead for good in the final minute before holding off Indiana State 73-71 in the opening game of the AdvoCare Invitational at Disney World on Thursday.

Joe Thomas shrugged off a poor shooting performance to put the Cyclones ahead with a 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining. Nazareth Mitrou-Long made one of two free throws with 7.6 seconds left, and Indiana State’s hope for an upset ended when Brenton Scott’s 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Louisville shuts down high-scoring Wichita State: Louisville added a late-night wrinkle to its defense, ran out to a big lead and hung on to earn a trip to the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Donovan Mitchell made two 3-pointers in the final 4 1/2 minutes and scored 14 points to help No. 10 Louisville beat Wichita State 62-52.

Quentin Snider also scored 14 points for the Cardinals (5-0). They locked down defensively in the first half, then turned away the Shockers’ second-half comeback.

Motley dominates; Baylor cruises past Spartans: Johnathan Motley scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half and No. 20 Baylor dominated after halftime to beat No. 24 Michigan State 73-58 on Thursday to reach the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game.

Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. added 14 points and eight rebounds – nearly all in the second half – for the Bears (5-0), who sprinted out of the break with a 12-2 run on the way to shooting 55 percent in the second half. That quickly turned a 33-30 halftime deficit into a double-digit lead against the cold-shooting Spartans (3-3).

Miami manhandles Stanford: Ja’Quan Newton had 20 points and Anthony Lawrence added 18 as Miami beat Stanford 67-53 in the opening round Thursday of the AdvoCare Invitational.

Bruce Brown chipped in 10 points for the Hurricanes (4-0).

West Virginia thumps Illinois: Nathan Adrian had 13 points and eight rebounds in No. 19 West Virginia’s 89-57 victory over Illinois in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Barclays Center in New York.

Jevon Carter added 10 points, six rebounds, six steals and five assists for the Mountaineers (4-0).

Temple upsets Florida State: Quinton Rose scored 26 points, including two free throws with 2 seconds left, to lead Temple to an 89-86 win over No. 25 Florida State in the first game of the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.

Shizz Alston Jr. added 22 points and Obi Enechionyia finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Owls, who improved to 3-2 with their second straight win. The win was also Temple’s third in four all-time meetings with Florida State.

Arizona holds off pesky Santa Clara: Lauri Markkanen had 16 points and nine rebounds, and No. 8 Arizona held off Santa Clara 69-61 to reach the championship game of the Continental Las Vegas Invitational.

Kobi Simmons added 14 points for the Wildcats (5-0), who will play Butler for the title on Friday.

Freshman PG Ball propels UCLA past Pilots: Freshman sensation Lonzo Ball had 18 points and 11 assists for his second career double-double, Thomas Welch added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and No. 14 UCLA romped past Portland 99-77 in the first round of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, California.

All five starters for the Bruins (5-0) scored in double figures. Isaac Hamilton had 16 points, TJ Leaf added 14 and Bryce Alford 13.

Pacioretty’s goal lifts Montreal over ‘Canes

NHL: Max Pacioretty broke a tie 14 seconds into the third period and the Montreal Canadiens beat Carolina 2-1 on Thursday night to end the Hurricanes’ winning streak at five games.

Carey Price made 31 saves, and Andrew Shaw also scored for Montreal. The Canadiens improved to 15-4-2 and avenged a 3-2 loss last week in Carolina with backup Al Montoya in goal.

Senators score two in the third in win over Boston: Senators Chris Wideman and Kyle Turris scored in the third period to help the Ottawa Senators beat the Boston Bruins 3-1 at the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa, Ontario.

Mark Stone tied it in the second period, and Craig Anderson made 19 saves. The Senators improved to 12-7-1.

David Pastrnak scored for Boston, and Tuukka Rask stopped 23 shots. The Bruins dropped to 11-9-0.

Former Red Sox All-Star Ferriss dies

Miscellany: David “Boo” Ferriss, a Boston Red Sox pitcher who helped lead the team to the 1946 World Series, has died. He was 94.

Rick Cleveland, a close friend of the former player, says Ferriss died Thursday at his home in Cleveland, Mississippi, surrounded by family. Cleveland says Ferriss had been in declining health for several weeks.

Ferriss pitched six years for the Red Sox from 1945-50. He had his best season in 1946, when he finished with a 25-6 record and 3.25 ERA and was named an American League All-Star. The Shaw, Mississippi, native’s career was shortened by a shoulder injury in 1947, but he finished with a 65-30 career record.

Cabrera conquers wind at World Cup: Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello was the only player to give thanks to the stiff south-westerly wind that buffeted the field in the World Cup’s opening round.

He threw back his head in a mix of relief and delight when a birdie attempt on the 18th green hovered on the right lip and then dropped into the cup to propel his team into the lead.

Cabrera-Bello and teammate Jon Rahm had a 3-under 69 to edge one stroke ahead of France, China and the U.S. after the foursomes competition at Kingston Heath in Melbourne, Australia.

Rooney climbs Man U record books in Europa win: Wayne Rooney surpassed Ruud van Nistelrooy as Manchester United’s all-time top scorer in European competitions on Thursday, leading the English club to a 4-0 win over Feyenoord and keeping it alive in the Europa League.

After scoring his 39th European goal in the 35th minute, Rooney also unselfishly set up Juan Mata in the 69th, leaving United on its way to an easy victory and in a good position to advance to the knockout rounds.

United got a third on the board with an own-goal by Feyenoord goalkeeper Brad Jones after an angled shot by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 75th.

Women’s golf teacher Bell dies: Peggy Kirk Bell, a leading teacher and one of the most passionate advocates for women’s golf, has died at her home in Pine Needles at age 95.

Kelly Miller, her son-in-law and the club president at Pine Needles and Mid Pines, informed club members that she died on Wednesday, according to The Pilot newspaper.
