Sun Belt roundup: Louisiana-Lafayette snaps Arkansas State’s 15-game conference win streak

Associated Press

Anthony Jennings passed for two touchdowns, Taboris Lee had a pick-6 and Louisiana-Lafayette snapped Arkansas State’s 15-game conference win streak 24-19 in Lafayette, Louisiana, on Saturday.

Ja’Marcus Bradley had four receptions for 113 yards and the Louisiana defense, which gave up 521 total yards, had back-to-back, fourth-down stops on the Red Wolves’ final two possessions.

Steven Coutts’ 66-yard punt gave Arkansas State (6-5, 6-1) possession at the 17 with 5:55 left and on fourth-and-6 from the ULL 48 Justice Hansen’s pass fell incomplete. After the Ragin’ Cajuns (5-6, 4-3) went three-and-out, Arkansas State drove to the 11 where, on fourth-and-10, Hansen was flushed from the pocket and was stopped by Mario Osborne at the 7 to seal it. Hansen pitched the ball and Joseph Bacchus scooped it off the turf and scored, but it was overturned after replay officials determined Hansen’s knee was down.

Arkansas State’s Ja’Von Rolland-Jones had 10 tackles, including 3 1/2 for losses and two sacks to become the Sun Belt Conference’s career leader with 27 sacks.

Louisiana-Lafayette had 292 total yards.

Troy 40, Texas State 7: Brandon Silvers was 20 of 28 for 217 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions and the Trojans (9-2, 6-1) beat the Bobcats (2-9, 0-7) in San Marcos, Texas.

Troy bounced back from its first conference setback of the season – a 35-3 loss to Arkansas State last week.

With Arkansas State losing to Louisiana-Lafayette, the Trojans can still clinch a share of the Sun Belt title with a win over Georgia Southern next Saturday.

Jordan Chunn ran 19 times for 74 yards and a touchdown and Tevaris McCormick had five catches for 76 yards and a score. Josh Anderson added 36 yards rushing and two TD runs for Troy.

Anderson’s second TD run made it 37-0 with 9:44 left in the third quarter. Stedman Mayberry put the Bobcats on the board with a 10-yard run with 1:10 left in the third and Ryan Kay’s second field goal capped the scoring late in the fourth quarter.

Appalachian State 37, New Mexico State 7: Taylor Lamb accounted for three touchdowns, Jalin Moore ran for 111 yards and a score and the Mountaineers (9-3, 7-1) cruised past the Aggies (3-8, 2-5) at Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Lamb completed 20 of 28 passes for 220 yards and a score and added 71 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Marcus Cox had 140 yards rushing and Michael Rubino kicked field goals of 20, 31 and 27 yards for Appalachian State.

Moore scored on a 1-yard run and Lamb hit Shaedon Meadors for a 42-yard touchdown to make it 17-0 with 5:43 left in the first quarter.

A 54-yard touchdown pass from Conner Cramer to Tyrian Taylor pulled New Mexico State within 10, but Appalachian State scored the final 20 points – including scoring runs of 4 and 48 yards by Lamb.

The Mountaineers had 604 total yards and limited New Mexico State to 240 – zero in the first quarter.
