Computer switch could disrupt car-tab renewals in Washington

People who need to renew their car tabs this month may want to consider doing it early to avoid any headaches that may come with a switch to a new computer system.

The Washington Department of Licensing is switching over to the new system beginning next week. Online renewals will stop on Dec. 6. All Spokane County licensing offices will close early on Dec. 9 and will be closed on Dec. 10 to allow the system to be installed.

The new system is expected to be up and running on Dec. 12 and online renewals will resume at that point. Wait times are expected to be longer after Dec. 12 as employees get used to the new system.

“As with any new system, it will take a little time to work out the kinks,” said Spokane county Auditor Vicky Dalton. “Ultimately, this new system will be faster and more convenient.”

The computer system currently used by the Department of Licensing is 30 years old.
