Dispute that led to shooting allegedly over marijuana plants

A man involved in a shooting in Deer Park Tuesday evening gave deputies conflicting stories about the confrontation after he called 911 and reported his location so deputies could find him.

Daniel L. Early, 60, is being held in the Spokane County Jail on $500,000 bond for suspected first-degree assault. He told deputies that the victim attacked him and was about to kick him in the head when he shot the victim in self-defense, according to court documents.

Deputies reported that Early changed the details of his story several times, but did say that he had gone to the home in the 27300 block of North Dalton to confront the victim about the theft of some marijuana plants.

A witness told deputies that Early and the victim shoved and punched each other, but that the victim had turned his back and was walking away when he was shot, according to court documents. The gun believed to be used in the crime was found in Early’s home.
