Signed A person with direct knowledge of the negotiations says free agent guard J.R. Smith has agreed to a contract offer to return to the defending NBA champion Cavaliers. Smith has been waiting out of training camp with the Cavs but now has a deal in place. ESPN.com reported Smith will sign a four-year, $57 million deal.

Honored Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike was a unanimous pick to all-WNBA team, receiving 39 first-place votes and 195 points from the media panel. New York center Tina Charles was second with 38 first-team votes and 193 points. Guards Maya Moore of Minnesota and Sue Bird of Seattle, and forward Elena Delle Donne completed the first team. Ogwumike averaged 19.7 points and 9.1 rebounds in the regular season and helped the Sparks reach the WNBA Finals against Minnesota.

Determined The Oklahoma State University basketball player who died in July following an outdoor team workout suffered from an enlarged heart and died of natural causes, the state medical examiner’s office said. Forward Tyrek Coger, 22, collapsed on July 21 following a 40-minute team workout on the football stadium stairs when the temperature was 99 degrees.

Investigated For the second time in four years, a top University of Texas track coach is being investigated by school officials for alleged misconduct. Longhorns head track coach Mario Sategna, who took indefinite personal leave last month, is the subject of an ethics and misconduct probe, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Suspended Detroit Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway has been suspended for three games after pleading no contest last month to a drunken driving charge. The Detroit Free Press reported last month that Hardaway was sentenced to 18 months of probation and 10 days of community service following his plea.
