No. 18 Washington State volleyball upset by California

Kyra Holt had another double-double but it was not enough as No. 18 Washington State (17-7, 7-5) was upset in three sets by California (9-13, 3-9) in Pac-12 play on Saturday in Berkeley, California, 25-23, 25-17, 25-22.

Holt led the Cougars with 12 kills and 11 digs for her 46th double-double of her WSU career.

WSU returns home against Oregon State on Friday.

Santa Clara 3, Gonzaga 1: Imani Wimbush had 17 kills but Gonzaga (13-8, 6-5) fell to Santa Clara in four sets, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22, in a West Coast Conference match in Santa Clara, California.

Emmy Allen added 13 kills, Faith Smith had 28 assists and Morgan Douglass led with 23 digs.

Nikki Hess registered 19 kills with 11 digs for Santa Clara.

The Zags host Loyola Marymount on Thursday.

Whitworth 3, Pacific Lutheran 1: Emiko Kahler and Cassandra Mendoza had 18 kills apiece and Whitworth (19-5, 13-1) beat Pacific Lutheran (12-10, 10-4) in four sets, 18-25, 28-26, 25-13, 25-22, in a Northwest Conference match in Tacoma for its sixth win in a row.

Kahler added 18 digs and Erin White had 54 assists with 19 digs.

The conference champion Pirates face Whitman in Walla Walla on Wednesday.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth 2, Lewis & Clark 1: Brooke Morrow scored a golden goal and the Pirates downed the visiting Pioneers in a Northwest Conference match.

The Pirates (8-9, 7-6) have a one-game lead over Linfield for third place in the NWC.

Arielle Van Peursem scored an open-net goal in the fourth minute of the match.

Sienna Tanner finished the game with three saves to improve to 8-5.

The Pirates play host to George Fox on Sunday at 11 a.m.

CC Spokane 5, Walla Walla 1: Maddy Boyd and Erica Simpson scored two goals apiece and the visiting Sasquatch (17-0-4, 13-0-1) defeated the Warriors (13-5-2) 5-1.

CCS earned a bye as the top seed from the NWAC East Division and will host a second-round match on Saturday.

North Idaho 1, Wenatchee Valley 1: Meg Lowery scored in the 56th minute and the Cardinals (12-2-3, 10-1-3) tied the Knights (8-7-3, 6-7-1) 1-1 at Spokane Falls CC. The match was moved to SFCC due to unplayable conditions at NIC.

Brenna Whitney’s unassisted goal for Wenatchee Valley tied it in the 66th minute.

The Cardinals finished second in the NWAC East Division and will host a first-round playoff game against Green River on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at SFCC.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth 1, Linfield 0: A 68th-minute goal by Jonah Snyder – his 14th of the season – gave the Pirates the edge over the Wildcats in a Northwest Conference match on Friday night in McMinnville, Oregon.

The Pirates have an eight point lead over second place Pacific (Oregon) with 29 points and a 9-1-2 NWC record (11-3-2 overall).

Timmy Costa (9-2-2) posted his third shutout of the season, cleaning up the only Linfield shot on goal.

The Pirates head south to Salem, Oregon, Sunday to face Willamette in what could be a Northwest Conference-clinching match for Whitworth.

CC Spokane 3, Walla Walla 1: Jonathan Cortez registered a hat trick and the visiting Sasquatch (13-3-3, 13-1-1) beat the Warriors (10-6-3, 7-6-2) 3-1 in their Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season finale.

CCS had the top seed from the NWAC East Division wrapped up and earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs. They will host a second-round match on Saturday.

North Idaho 3, Wenatchee Valley 2: Alec Maldonado scored the tie-breaking goal in the 88th minute and the Cardinals (7-8-4, 7-6-2) edged the Knights (6-10-1, 5-9-1) 3-2 at SFCC.

Max Mularski and Koby Murphree both had first-half goals for the Cardinals. Lenin Guzman had a pair of goals for Wenatchee.

With the win and Walla Walla’s loss, NIC earns the No. 2 seed in the NWAC East Division and will host West No. 3-seed Pierce at SFCC on Wednesday.

Wrestling

MSU-Northern 25, NIC 16: The Cardinals fell to the Lights 25-16 in Havre, Montana. At 184 pounds, NIC’s Levi Perry beat Steeler French by fall. Other winners for the Cardinals were Garret White (125), Bryson Beard (133) and Trey Meyer (165).

Cross country

NWC Championships: The Whitworth women earned a first-place finish in Brooks, Oregon – its second straight NWC title – behind standout Kayla Leland, who finished second with a time of 21 minutes, 14.4 seconds.

Willamette’s Olivia Manci won the individual title in 20:53.8.

Whitworth’s Toby Schwarz was named NWC Women’s Coach of the Year.

The Pirates’ men’s team came in fourth. Grant Bingham crossed the line first for the Pirates and fifth overall with a time of 25:55.4, a personal record.

Willamette won the men’s meetwhile Pacific Lutheran’s Brad Hodkinson took top honors in 24:56:3.

The Whitworth cross country teams will return to Bush Pasture Park in Salem, Oregon, to compete in the NCAA Division III West Regional on Nov. 12.
