Men’s soccer: Whitworth clinches NWC title and NCAA tournament berth
Kyle Morris launched a shot from Whitworth’s side of midfield that bounced over the Willamette goaltender’s head for a 1-0 double-overtime victory Sunday in Salem that clinched the Northwest Conference men’s soccer title plus a trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Whitworth (12-3-2, 10-1-2) has 32 points with one regular-season game remaining, eight more than second-place Pacific.
Timmy Costa made four saves in the shutout over the Bearcats (8-7-1, 6-6-1) and made the pass to Morris on the goal in the 108th minute.
Whitworth played a man down after Aaron Yanagi was issued his second yellow card of the match in the 95th minute.
Adrien Perez scored early in overtime to give Loyola Marymount (8-8-0, 2-3-0 West Coast) a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga (8-7-1, 2-3-0) in Spokane. The Bulldogs put seven shots on goal in coming up empty against Lions keeper Collin Partee.
Gonzaga has two matches remaining.
