Area roundup: Eagles’ Cooper Kupp collects more awards

More catches, more yardage, more touchdowns. And, oh, yeah, more honors.

That’s the report from Week 8 of the Eastern Washington football season for its incomparable wide receiver, Cooper Kupp.

The senior from Yakima caught eight passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns, the 28th time in his 46-game career that he’s had more than 100 yards receiving, helping lead the Eagles to a 35-16 victory over the Montana Grizzlies on a rainy Saturday at Roos Field.

He also threw a pass for 54 yards to quarterback Gage Gubrud that set up another TD, and for all that he was named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season and gained a similar national honor from College Sports Madness.

Kupp has had 45 catches for 660 yards and six touchdowns in five games against the Grizzlies and has gone over 1,000 yards receiving for the fourth time in his career.

“His biggest attribute is his consistency, and that he continues to find ways to produce when everybody’s eyes are on him, ” said coach Beau Baldwin.

“But he’ll be the first to tell you it’s easy to get open and find success when he’s playing around a lot of other great players.”

Hockey

Kailer Yamamoto, the Spokane Chiefs’ home-grown forward has been named the Western Hockey League Player of the Week.

Yamamoto, in his third season with the Chiefs, had three goals and four assists in four games to vault into second place in the league scoring race with 23 points. His 10 goals tie for third among WHL goal-scorers.

Off the ice, the Chiefs announced that 17-year-old forward Logan Foster has been reassigned to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Foster, the Chiefs’ seventh-round selection in the 2014 Bantam draft, had one assist in seven games for Spokane this season.

Volleyball

Washington State (17-7, 7-5 Pac-12) will take a No. 23 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Poll this week into games Oregon State on Friday and No. 20 Oregon on Saturday in Bohler Gym.

Washington, ranked No. 8 in the AVCA poll, entertain Oregon on Friday.

Golf

North Idaho College finished second in both the men’s and women’s competition at the Walla Walla Warriors Fall Invitational that wound up a 36-hole run on Monday.

Sean Langham finished in a three-way tie for first at 1-under 143 to lead the Cardinals to a 584 men’s team score, four back of Walla Walla. The Cardinals’ Ross TGilbert was fourth at 144.

Community Colleges of Spokane finished sixth at 607 led by Logan Skala’s 149.

Madi Brown of NIC shot 163 to tie for third as the Cardinals women shot 502 bechind winner Lewis-Clark State’s 483. CCS was fourth at 516 led by Megan Cysewski and Haley Rotchford, who tied for 14th at 172.
