Newsmakers: Hall of Fame boxer Bobby Chacon dies at 64

Died Hall of Fame boxer Bobby Chacon died Wednesday under hospice care for dementia. He was 64. The former WBC featherweight and super featherweight champion had a career record of 59-7-1 with 47 knockouts.

Former Indianapolis Colts and Oklahoma State kicker Cary Blanchard died Tuesday at age 47. Mindi Blanchard said her ex-husband passed away unexpectedly of what she believes was a massive heart attack, but added that an autopsy has not been performed.

Rescheduled British fighter Tyson Fury’s rescheduled heavyweight title rematch against Wladimir Klitschko will take place on Oct. 29 – if Fury is cleared by a doping panel before then. Fury beat Klitschko in November to claim the WBA, WBO and IBF titles. A rematch was originally scheduled for July 9 but was postponed after Fury said he sustained an ankle injury.

Announced Forward Jonathan Huberdeau’s $35.4 million, six-year extension was formally announced by the Florida Panthers Wednesday. So far in 2016 alone, the Panthers have committed more than $184 million in contracts to five players who are all age 25 or younger.

Signed Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez signed a contract extension to stay at the school until Jan. 31, 2021. Financial terms of the extension were not immediately announced. Alvarez’s salary was $1.125 million as of July 1.

Fired Longtime Minnesota wrestling coach J Robinson was fired after the university said an investigation into an alleged drug ring within the program revealed that he “failed to disclose information regarding drug-related activity” on the team and made unauthorized promises of amnesty to his athletes.

Robinson coached the Gophers for 30 years and led the team to three national championships, carving out a reputation as a hard-charging, outspoken and occasionally combative figure on campus. He enjoyed as much success as any Gophers coach of his era, but was embroiled in a drug scandal this spring when police investigated allegations that more than a dozen wrestlers sold and used the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.

Police declined to file charges in the case, citing a lack of evidence.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is without a coach for the second time this year after firing former doubles specialist Frantisek Cermak to end a partnership that began in April. In January, Kvitova terminated her seven-year partnership with coach David Kotyza.

Kvitova has been struggling since, and is ranked 16th. Her major success this year was the bronze from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Penalized NASCAR docked Richard Childress Racing’s Ryan Newman 15 points before the final qualifying race for the playoffs. Newman is now 22 points behind McMurray after the penalty for failing post-race inspection at Darlington Raceway on Sunday night.
