Area roundup: Cougars hand 4th-ranked Huskies first defeat

Kyra Holt led all players with 21 kills, McKenna Woodford added 12 kills and Alexis Dirige tallied a match-high 24 digs to lead the Washington State Cougars (11-2, 1-0) to a 16-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-19 victory over the fourth-ranked Washington Huskies (10-1, 0-1) in a Pac-12 volleyball opener in Seattle on Wednesday.

Haley MacDonald and Nicole Rigoni combined for 47 assists for the Cougars.

Courtney Schwan topped UW with 15 kills.

Jessica Schmautz had eight kills and Bianca Sanchez added nine digs to guide the CC Spokane Sasquatch (14-6, 2-0) to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 sweep over visiting Wenatchee Valley (8-12, 1-2) in Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Brooke Bell had 11 kills and finished with a .450 attack percentage and Brittany Gay piled up 32 assists to lead the North Idaho Cardinals (7-4, 4-1) to a 25-15, 25-9, 25-14 sweep of the visiting Yakima Valley Yaks (9-5, 2-2) in NWAC play.

Soccer

Courtney Potter scored in the first half, Leah Corra added a second-half goal and McKenzie Hemp assisted on both tallies to propel the Whitworth Pirates women (2-5, 1-2) to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Whitman Missionaries (0-7, 0-3) in Northwest Conference action.

Stephanie Overland finished with a hat trick and Jenna Sullens, Maddy Boyd, Peyton Vasquez and Anisha Nicholson each scored two goals to power the unbeaten CC Spokane Sasquatch women (8-0-3, 4-0) to a 12-2 rout of visiting Blue Mountain (0-7, 0-3) in NWAC action.

Breno Rocha scored goals in the 16th and 83rd minutes to propel the CC Spokane Sasquatch men (3-3-2, 3-1) to a 2-0 victory over the visiting North Idaho Cardinals (1-5-2, 1-3) in NWAC play.

Junior hockey

Devin Nemes scored a pair of goals and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks rolled to an 8-3 win over the visiting Spokane Braves in KIJHL action. Paxton Malone had two goals for Spokane.
