Suspect in death of Spokane girl, 2, resists extradition from N. Idaho

Jason J. Obermiller (Kootenai County Jail)

The man wanted for allegedly killing a 2-year-old Spokane girl last week told a Kootenai County judge Wednesday he would not waive extradition to Spokane County on a second-degree murder charge.

Appearing in court the day after his arrest at a cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene, Jason J. Obermiller said, “I don’t want to waive, I want an attorney.”

Obermiller, 32, faces the murder charge for the death of Adalynn Hoyt, who died of a single blow to the stomach. He was living with the girl’s mother, 28-year-old Lovina Rainey, who told investigators the girl and her other three children were in Obermiller’s care when Adalynn was fatally injured.

Idaho 1st District Magistrate Judge Timothy Van Valin appointed Obermiller a Kootenai County public defender Wednesday and set the next court hearing for Sept. 30. Obermiller also is wanted in Washington on charges of burglary, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance, as well as probation violations.

Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Obermiller Tuesday afternoon in a cabin near Worley. He had been on the run since the girl died Sept. 12 in a home in the 3300 block of East 55th Avenue.

Obermiller is in the Kootenai County Jail on a $250,000 bond.
