EWU Eagles open conference volleyball season with 3-1 win over Montana Grizzlies

Jessica Gilbert hit .360 and had 11 kills, Sophie Miller handed out 40 assists and Eastern Washington flew past Montana for a 25-20, 19-25, 25-13, 15-11 victory in Missoula in a Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.

The Eagles (6-4, 1-0 Big Sky) outhit Montana 48-36 and held the Griz (3-8, 0-1) to a .054 hitting percentage. EWU concludes its season-opening 11-match road trip Saturday night in Bozeman with a Big Sky matchup versus host Montana State.

Sarah Sharp had 20 kills to lead Idaho past Montana State (2-8, 1-0) and help earn head coach Debbie Buchanan the 250th win of her career with a 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 Big Sky Conference victory in Bozeman.

Megan Ramseyer had 44 assists to lead the Vandals (6-7, 1-0), who next visit Missoula at 1 p.m. Saturday for a Big Sky matchup.

Gonzaga could not capitalize on a 28-26 first-set victory, dropping the next three sets 17-25, 21-25, 21-25 to host Saint Mary’s in a West Coast Conference opener for both teams in Moraga, California.

Emmy Allen led GU (7-4, 0-1) with 15 kills while the Bulldogs were outhit 58-43 by the Gaels (6-6, 1-0).

Gonzaga shares second place nationally with its student-athletes graduating at a 99 percent rate, according the latest NCAA figures. Harvard achieved 100 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR). The Zags shared second with Columbia, Dartmouth, Evansville, Loyola-Chicago and Yale.
