Flag cartoon misses point

In his Sept. 14 cartoon, Jim Morin misses the entire point of paying respect to our flag and our country. Yes, we all have the right of freedom of speech. But there is a time and place for everything, and a sports venue is not the place.

First of all, these overpaid athletes are making huge salaries in a taxpayer subsidized stadium. Where else in the world would they be able to do that? Remember the Washington State Stadium Commission that approved a surcharge in sales tax on hotels and restaurants and other things? Teams have moved from state to state, with no noticeable economic impact on the departed cities — L.A. Rams or Houston Oilers, for instance.

These athletes should thank this nation that they are able to play, with obscene salaries, and the ability to make fools of themselves on TV. Disrespecting our nation and its veterans is abominable.

Let’s look at all the black people who have made it in various disciplines. From mayors, police and fire, to members of congress and the Supreme Court and to the presidency. Not to mention the business world, including the arts.

What an ungracious thing to do.
