Area roundup: Alivia Brown paces Cougars’ fourth-place finish

Alivia Brown turned in the best performance of her career to lead the Washington State Cougars women to a fourth-place showing at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colorado, on Wednesday.

Brown shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to finish second with a 6-under 210 total over three rounds. Brown finished three shots behind medalist Malene Hansen of Coastal Carolina. The Cougs finished 15 strokes behind winner San Diego State.

Soccer

Jocelyn Cook-Cox scored a pair of second-half goals 2 minutes apart and finished with a hat trick to lead the North Idaho women (7-1, 5-0) to a 3-1 win over visiting Treasure Valley (6-2-5, 2-1-4) in NWAC play.

Maddy Boyd and Jenna Sullens scored goals in the second half to lift the CC Spokane women (10-3, 6-0) to a 2-0 road win over Yakima Valley (3-2-4, 2-1-3) in NWAC play.

Muganza Katanga scored in each half to send the North Idaho men (3-2-5, 3-0-3) to a 2-0 win over host Treasure Valley (2-2-6, 1-1-4) in NWAC play.

Jonathan Cortez scored a goal in the 55th minute with an assist from Jared Davis and Breno Rocha added a goal in the 72nd minute to send the CC Spokane Sasquatch men (5-2-3, 5-0-1) to a 2-0 victory over the Columbia Basin Hawks (4-3-2, 2-2-2) in NWAC play in Pasco.

Volleyball

Brooke Bell and Halle Hess combined for 25 kills and the North Idaho Cardinals (8-4, 5-1) rolled to a 25-14, 19-25, 25-20, 25-18 win over the host CC Spokane Sasquatch (17-7, 4-1) in NWAC action.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Chiefs acquired goalie Dawson Weatherill and a conditional fifth-round pick from Red Deer in exchange for the rights to goalie Tyson Verheist and a third-round pick.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pound Weatherill played five games for Red Deer as a 16-year-old last season. He had a 3.69 goals-against average.
