Area baseball: Gonzaga earns doubleheader split at Pepperdine

Jake Vieth smacked a two-run homer, and Gonzaga (14-12, 6-2 West Coast Conference) earned a baseball doubleheader split against Pepperdine (12-13, 2-3) Saturday in Malibu, California.

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 in the first game before Jeff Bohling singled in the eighth inning and Vieth followed with the winning shot.

Eli Morgan (4-1) tossed a complete-game three-hitter.

The Zags fell behind early in the second game and lost 5-3.

Tyler Frost got GU on the board with a solo homer in the sixth.

California 7, Washington State 2: The Bears (11-13, 3-5 Pacific-12) pushed across six runs in the seventh to beat the Cougars (14-10, 1-4) in Berkeley, California.

Blake Clanton and Andres Alvarez staked WSU to a lead with RBI doubles in the fifth, but Tanner Dodson’s two-run double keyed the Bears’ rally.

Whitworth 5-7, Lewis & Clark 1-4: Garrett Hughes went 3 for 4 and scored a pair of runs as the Pirates (16-10, 8-9 Northwest Conference) brushed aside the Pioneers (5-23, 4-13) in the first game in Spokane.

Ryan Bird homered for the winning run in the second game. Matthew Nelson added three RBIs and Jacob Silva drove in a pair.

CC Spokane 6-4, Treasure Valley 2-5: Isaac Wersland homered and Brian Hill knocked in two runs to help the Sasquatch (9-8, 2-2 NWAC) win the opener at Spokane Falls CC. Nick Flesher (2-3) spun eight strong innings.

Tanner Cantwell picked up two hits and two runs to boost the Chukars (12-9, 3-1) in the second game.
