Whitworth collects 28 hits in doubleheader baseball sweep of Lewis & Clark

JT Phelan had five of Whitworth’s 28 hits on Sunday and scored six runs in the Pirates’ 9-2, 10-5 sweep of Lewis & Clark in Spokane.

Phelan, Garrett Hughes and Jacob Yamane had three hits each in the opener with Yamane slugging his third homer of the season. Cody Simmons had three hits and three RBIs in the second game.

Matthew Young (4-2) went eight innings, giving up four hits, one walk and one run in the opener. Brady Simmelink (3-0) started the second game and went five innings, giving up three runs.

The Pirates (18-10, 9-9), who started 0-5 in Northwest Conference play, are tied for fourth. The top four teams at then end of the regular season qualify for the conference tournament.

The Pioneers fell to 5-25, 5-13.
