Area roundup: Eli Morgan leads Gonzaga baseball over San Diego

Eli Morgan gave up one run on eight hits and two walks over five innings and Gonzaga beat visiting San Diego 9-2 on Friday.

Nick Brooks went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs. His solo shot in the fourth gave the Zags a 3-1 lead and came on an 0-2 pitch. Daniel Frederickson went 4 for 4 with two runs

USD cut its deficit to 5-2 in the sixth on an RBI triple by Hunter Mercado-Hood, but Gonzaga answered with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth on an Nick Nyquist RBI single, a passed ball and Jake Vieth’s RBI double.

No. 8 Arizona 19, Washington State 5: J.J. Matijevic went 4 for 4 with a homer, two doubles and six RBIS and the visiting Wildcats (22-7) crushed the Cougars (14-13).

The Wildcats put up 12 runs in the sixth inning. Matijevic had a two-run double and two-run homer in the frame. Jared Oliva went 4 for 6 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs, and Alfonso Rivas went 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs. Cal Stevenson added a homer and went 2 for 4.

Cougars reliever Damon Jones wore this one. He gave up 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings.

Shane Matheny hit a two-run homer for the Cougars.

Washington 7, UCLA 3: Joey Morgan went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and the visiting Huskies (17-11) topped the Bruins (13-14).

Morgan’s two-run homer put Washington up 4-1 in the fifth. M.J. Hubbs went 3 for 5 with a pair driven in and added a solo homer in the eighth. The Huskies put up single runs in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Noah Bremer earned the win (3-2) with seven innings of relief and allowed two runs on two hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts.

Brett Stephens homered twice and drove in three for UCLA. Griffin Canning allowed five runs – four earned – on 10 hits and two walks, striking out eight over 5 2/3 innings.

Women’s golf

Eastern Washington’s Madalyn Ardueser finished tied for seventh at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Maricopa, Arizona.

The Eagles placed 12th place of 18 teams at 53-over 917 (311-310-296). Eastern bested fellow Big Sky Conference foes Montana, Montana State and Weber State.

Ardueser shot 75-74-71 to finish 4-over 220 in the three-day tourney.

Kirsten Ishikawa tied for 41st place (229), Kimberlie Miyamoto was tied for 70th (236), Ashley Ohland was tied for 75th (237) and Megan Ohland tied for 87th (242).

Julia Becker from Sacramento State took individual honors (3-under 213) and UC Irvine won the team competition.

Track and field

Kendra Hamm of Eastern Washington won the women’s heptathlon at the 45th annual Pelluer Invitational, hosted by Eastern Washington.

Hamm, who ranks third in school history in the heptathlon, fell just two points shy of her career best with 4,675 points in her first-place finish.

Payton Lewis of Northwest Nazarene won the men’s decathlon.

The meet continues on Saturday. The field portion begins at 10 a.m., followed by the running events at 1:15 p.m.
