Second Harvest won’t waver

In 2016, I returned home to Spokane and received amazing training, care and opportunities through an AmeriCorps position, as I finished up my graduate program. My six months with Second Harvest of the Inland Northwest and their partnership with Spokane Regional Health District provided me with life experience that allowed me to move to Portland, Oregon, to pursue a career in public health.

Since January, I am more aware of the budget cuts happening across social services, such as the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). It’s overwhelming, and I’m not sure how much impact my millennial peers and I will have in this tense political climate.

However, I know that Spokane cares. I know that the CNCS Washington office supports more than 1,600 local service sites. I care about healthy kids, my friends that do this work every day and health equity.

Despite financial threats facing the CNCS, I know that neighbors will take care of each other, Second Harvest will continue to help people find healthy food, and my friends will continue to do good work. I’m hopeful for the future and I hope you are too.
