Area roundup: Gonzaga’s Kiara Kudron selected for all-star tour of China

Gonzaga redshirt senior Kiara Kudron has been selected to join the NetScouts Basketball USA Women’s All-Star team headed to China to participate in the Four Nations international basketball tournament.

The team, organized and coached by NetScouts Basketball, will play in three cities for a total of nine games against the national teams of China and Lithuania as well as an All-Star team from Canada. The team will play three games in round-robin matches in Weng’an from April 28-30, Tongren from May 2-4 and in Jiahe from May 6-8.

In her senior season, Kudron was named to the All-WCC first team as well as to the WCC All-Tournament team after helping lead Gonzaga to the conference title and an NCAA bid. She averaged 9.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists for the season.

Men’s golf

Gonzaga’s Angus Montgomery carded a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah, on Thursday. The senior sits in a tie for second, one stroke out of first place.

Montgomery’s 4-under round matched a season-low for the Zags. He made seven birdies on Day 1, which were the most in the 45-golfer field. His round of 68 was one stroke shy of matching his career-low round.

Ryan Gaske is a stroke behind Montgomery in a tie for fifth place. He had a bogey-free round with 15 pars, matching the most in the tournament on the first day.

The Bulldogs are tied for sixth on the team leaderboard, three strokes out of the top three, and 10 strokes behind the leader, BYU. Gonzaga posted its third-lowest round of the season with a 1-over 289.

Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh leads the individual leaderboard at 5-under 67.

Women’s golf

Reigning West Coast Conference individual champion Ciera Min of Gonzaga is back in the hunt, shooting a 1-over 73, to sit in a tie for second place at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships at Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah.

Min is two strokes back of leader Hira Naveed of Pepperdine.

Teammate and reigning WCC Golfer of the Month Bianca Pagdanganan was one stroke back of Min with a 2-over 74, tied for eighth.

Gonzaga opened the first day at the tournament with a score of 308, sitting at 20-over par, one stroke behind San Francisco for third place.

Pepperdine finished 3-over par and leads BYU by five strokes.
