Area roundup: Corey Meyer’s walk-off walk lifts Washington State baseball over Washington

Corey Meyer walked with the bases loaded in the 11th inning and Washington State (17-18, 3-10) knocked off visiting Washington (20-15, 7-6) 5-4 in the first of a three-game Pac-12 series on Friday.

Two batters earlier, Dillon Plew was thrown out at home trying to score on James Rudkin’s single with one out. J.J. Hancock was hit to load the bases, and Meyer took four straight balls from Jordan Jones to force in the winning run.

Rudkin went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and three others had two hits apiece. Scotty Sunitsch earned the win with 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

Gonzaga 13, Portland 0: Eli Morgan was dominant over eight innings and the visiting Bulldogs (23-14) routed the Pilots (8-29-1) in West Coast Conference action.

Morgan struck out 15 and gave up just three hits and two walks to run his season record to 7-1.

Jeff Bohling homered and finished 3 for 4 with two RBIs and the Bulldogs pounded out 15 hits.

Whitworth 4, Linfield 3: J.T. Phelen hit a solo home run in the 11th inning to help the top-seeded Pirates (33-8) top the fourth-seeded Wildcats (32-9) in the Northwest Conference tournament in McMinnville, Oregon.

Phelen finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs. T.J. Orchard picked up the win with two innings of no-hit relief.

Starter Matthew Young allowed two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Whitworth faces Willamette in the second round on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Softball

Whitworth 2, George Fox 0: Madi Perez tossed a five-hit shutout and the No. 1 seeded Pirates (33-8) advanced over the fourth-seeded Bruins (19-16) in the Northwest Conference tournament, held at Whitworth.

Perez (21-3) struck out two and walked one in seven innings. Whitworth scored twice in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Michelle Silva scored on a fielder’s choice and Tessa Matthews came home on a groundout.

The Pirates face Pacific Lutheran in the second round on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

North Idaho 6, Blue Mountain 2: Kennedy Anderson went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs and the Cardinals (21-7, 15-5) topped the Timberwolves (10-20, 7-13) in Northwest Athletic Conference play in Pendleton, Oregon.

Kayla Moore pitched a complete game and allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

North Idaho has won eight in a row and is in second place in the East Region, three games behind Wenatchee Valley.

Men’s golf

Gonzaga’s Ryan Gaske shot 1-under 71 in the second round and is in fourth place, three strokes out of first at the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships in Provo, Utah.

Gaske is at 4-under 140 entering Saturday’s third and final round at the Riverside Country Club.

Angus Montgomery fell from second to a tie for 13th, following a 4-over 76 . The senior is even-par (144) after 36 holes.

As a team, Gonzaga slid to ninth place. The Bulldogs are 12-over 588 after two rounds.

Women’s golf

WCC: Gonzaga’s Bianca Pagdanganan shot 4-over 76 and is tied for eighth (6-over 150) after the second round of the West Coast Conference Championship in Provo, Utah.

Ciera Min is in 14th following a 7-over 79 second round and Meiqi Gao shot 8-over 80 and is in 18th.

BYU is leading the field at 8-over par and Hira Naveed of Pepperdine remained in the lead at 1-under 143.

Big Sky: Clara Moyano shot 3-over 75, good for fifth place, and defending tournament champion Idaho sits four shots back in fourth place after the first round of the Big Sky Tournament in Boulder City, Nevada.

Defending individual champion Sophie Hausmann shot an opening round of 9-over 81 and is tied for 23rd.

Eastern Washington is in sixth place in the team competition, led by Mercedes Khumnark and Kirsten Ishikawa, tied for 18th at 8-over 80.

Northern Arizona’s Sofia Anokhina leads at even-par 72, while Portland State is atop the team standings.

Track and Field

Whitworth women’s team was in second place and the men tied for third after the first day of the Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships, hosted by Whitworth.

Allison Wood placed third in the women’s 10,000 meter run, Sierra Carlson was third and Haley Vick fifth in the hammer, and Kayla Brase was third in the high jump.

The Pirates’ Grant Bingham placed second in the men’s 10,000 meter run. Jacob Hubbard finished seventh in the hammer, Nathaniel Drotts took fourth in the pole vault and and Nicholas McGill was third in the long jump.
