Attempted murder charges can be filed up to 10 years later

OLYMPIA – Charges of attempted murder in Washington can be filed up to 10 years after the crime occurs under a new change to the state’s criminal law.

The new law, signed Tuesday by Gov. Jay Inslee, makes attempted murder different from most felonies, which have a three-year statute of limitations. Sen. Mike Padden, R-Spokane Valley and the sponsor of the bill, said attempted murder deserves a longer time limit, considering a successful murder attempt has no time limit on when it can be filed.
