Mariners pregame: Felix Hernandez takes mound as Seattle continues road trip in Detroit

The Mariners continue their 10-game, 11-day road trip to three cities with the first of three games against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.

The Mariners come off a four-game series at Oakland. The M’s fell in the first three games before they snapped the losing streak on Sunday when they routed the Athletics 11-1. The Tigers arrive back in Detroit after taking the series, 2-1, against the Minnesota Twins.

Felix Hernandez will take the mound on Tuesday against the Tigers. His history with the Tigers could give the M’s a needed advantage in Comerica Park. Hernandez has a 2.48 ERA agianst the Tigers, the third-lowest ERA against any single opponent in at least 50 innings. Since 2005, Hernandez’s 2.48 ERA is the lowest ERA against the Tigers among active players who have pitched against Detroit in at least 75 innings. His nine wins over Detroit are the fifth-most against any single opponent.

In other Mariner’s news: The M’s have welcomed back infielder Jean Segura on Tuesday from his rehab assignment at AA Arkansas after activating him from the 10-day disabled list. Segura takes the 25-man roster spot vacated when Mike Freeman was optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 23.

Segura injured himself on April 10 at Houston and was placed on the 10-day disabled list the next day. Before getting injured, Segura was batting .313 with one home run and three RBIs in eigth games with the Mariners.

  • Nelson Cruz has had at least one hit in the last 12 games and has reached base safely in the last 13 games. In his hitting streak, which started on April 10, Cruz is batting .378 with three home runs, four doubles and 12 RBIs…Form 2014 to 2016, Cruz has hit at least 25 home runs on the road. He joins Babe Ruth, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa as the only players in MLB history to hit 25 homers in at least three consecutive seasons…The M’s currently lead American League with 39 doubles. They are tied for second with Tampa Bay with 86 RBIs. Seattle is currently third in the league in runs scored with 90. Tampa Bay leads with 96 runs scored and the Yankees follow with 92…Mitch Haniger ranks first among American League rookies in runs scored (19), doubles (7), RBI (16), extra-base hits (12), walks (13), OBP (.430) and OPS (1.020).

This Day in Mariners History

In 1977, Ken Griffey Jr. hit three home runs in Seattle’s 13-8 win over Toronto. That day Griffey set a Major League record with 13 homers in April.
