Washington State University senior Derek Bayley shot a 5-under 67 Tuesday for a share of the first-round lead in the 91st Washington State Men’s Amateur.

Bayley, a product of Lakeland High in Rathdrum, carded six birdies and one bogey at Rope Rider in Cle Elum. He’s tied with Sean Fitzpatrick of Mill Creek, Washington. Vinnie Murphy and Nick Robinson are one shot back.

Hayden Lake’s Reid Hatley is tied for 12th after shooting a 71. Former Ferris Saxon Tanner Comes (72) is tied for 17th.

The 54-hole tournament continues Wednesday and Thursday at Tumble Creek, one of three courses at Suncadia Resort.

Tacoma’s Chase Carlton edged Bayley in a six-hole playoff to win last year’s title at Tacoma Country and Golf Club, Carlson’s home course. Carlson opened with a 76 Tuesday.

Bayley lost in the finals of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men’s Amateur in July at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell, Oregon.
