Bicyclist dies in collision with van Friday evening

By Drew Gerber The Spokesman-Review

A man riding a bicycle died Friday evening after colliding with a car at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Freya Street.

The bicyclist, identified as 50-year-old Michael E. Gonia by the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, was headed northbound on Freya Street at about 9 p.m. when a minivan heading south collided with Gonia as it turned east onto 12th Avenue, said officer John O’Brien, spokesman for the Spokane Police Department.

Gonia’s death, which has been ruled an accident by the medical examiner, resulted from a blunt neck injury that tore his carotid artery.

The incident is still under investigation, O’Brien said. No arrests have been made.
