OUTMENTORED – Novice sportsmen can learn a ton about hunting and fishing – and experience sportsmen might pick up a thing or two – on Friday and Saturday at the third annual Hunt and Fish Idaho Expo near Lewiston.

Knowledgeable sportsmen and Idaho Fish and Game staff will offer workshops covering a wide range of fishing and hunting workshops, from casting lures and live-firing rifles and shotguns to filleting fish and field dressing big game.

“Participants of the event will become connected to the tradition of hunting-fishing through a series of educational, hands-on workshops,” says Jerome Hansen, IFG’s Clearwater regional supervisor.

Shooting will be featured on Friday from 2-7 p.m. at the Lewis-Clark Wildlife Club Shooting Range, 27007 Tom Beale Rd. near Lapwai. Mentors will assist participants as they shoot shotguns or try various rifle calibers. A barbeque dinner will be served starting at 4 p.m.

Saturday features workshops and outdoor events at the Idaho Fish and Game Regional Headquarters.

“It can be a lot to take in for a first-time sportsman as they learn where to hunt, what to pack, choose the right weapon, and techniques and regulations for the fish and wildlife they wish to pursue,” says Hansen. “Our goal is to help make the learning process easier by providing information within a series of workshops offered throughout the day.”

Taste wild fish and game meat cooked in a variety of ways, or be content to eat a traditional lunch served by Boy Scouts and 4H shooting sports members.

Other specialized workshops include: fish cleaning and cooking, elk calling, traditional vs. modern archery, fly rod casting, upland game bird hunting, duck hunting, women in hunting and more.

Activities for kids include BB gun shooting range, bow building and laser shooting.
