What about Trump’s civility
I was at Rep. Cathy McMorris-Rodgers’s recent town hall. At this meeting, she talked about the importance of respecting each other and not labeling those we disagree with. While I appreciate that message, I found that her call for civility was greatly undercut by her refusal to criticize President Trump.
When asked if she approved of the president’s tweets, the congresswoman simply replied that President Trump seems to have found a way to take his message directly to the American people. At another point, she spoke admiringly of the president as a “positive disruptor.”
It seems that Rep. McMorris Rodgers holds her constituents to a higher standard than she holds the president of the United States — a man who has labeled those who disagree with him as “losers and haters” on Twitter, and who once encouraged the crowd at one of his rallies to “knock the hell” out of a protester.
When the leader of the free world seems incapable of restraint and diplomacy in his discourse, the global community is at risk. Until the congresswoman aims her call for civility at the White House, her concern for civility in public debate will ring hollow.
