Whitworth pegged for top spot: The Whitworth men’s soccer team is predicted to win its fourth straight Northwest Conference title, according to a poll of the conference’s eight head coaches released Thursday in Hillsboro, Oregon.

The Pirates received six first place votes and 54 total points to top the preseason coaches’ poll entering 2017. Whitworth finished 2017 on 33 points with a 10-1-3 conference record (12-4-3 overall) atop the conference table.

Whitworth won the 2016 NWC title with a six-point advantage over second place Pacific (Ore.), which was forecast to place fifth this season. The Pirates’ conference crown was their third straight and ninth since 2001.

The Pirates secured a spot in the 2016 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer National Championship thanks to earning the automatic bid from winning the NWC. Whitworth traveled to Texas for the opening round of the national tournament, falling 3-0 to Trinity (Texas).

Whitworth returns three first-team All-NWC honorees, including the co-top scorer in the NWC last season, junior midfielder Jonah Snyder.

The NWC soccer season gets underway on Sep. 1.
