Seven things to know about Nickelback

Love ’em or hate ’em (I’ll get to that later.), you can’t deny the staying power of Canadian rock quartet Nickelback. Since the release of its mainstream breakthrough “Silver Side Up,” which features the chart topping single “How You Remind Me,” in 2001, the band – drummer Daniel Adair, singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger, bassist Mike Kroeger and guitarist/keyboardist Ryan Peake – has been a radio and chart staple.

Nickelback is currently on the “Feed the Machine” tour in support of the album of the same name, the band’s ninth. In anticipation of its Tuesday show at the Spokane Arena, here are seven things to know about the band.

1. The “Feed the Machine” tour is the band’s first outing since it was forced to cancel a 2015 run of dates after Kroeger had surgery to remove a cyst on his voice box. The band previously played Spokane in 2012.

2. This tour is also the band’s fourth time touring with opening act Daughtry, after the “All the Right Reasons” tour in 2007, the “Dark Horse” tour in 2010 and the “Here and Now” tour in 2012. Singer Chris Daughtry and Kroeger co-wrote two songs on Daughtry’s second album “Leave This Town.”

3. On previous dates of the “Feed the Machine” tour, the band has invited a lucky fan onstage to sing hit single “Rockstar” karaoke style, so brush up on the lyrics to the song that made both the “Rolling Stone” list of the 100 best songs of 2007 (it placed 100th) and a Buzzfeed list of the 30 worst songs ever written. Ouch.

4. Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful Canadian bands, with album sales topping more than 50 million worldwide. The band was also the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S. in the 2000s. Who held the No. 1 spot? The Beatles.

5. Though not always critically acclaimed, Nickelback has found a home on the charts. Since “Silver Side Up,” every album it has released has landed in the top six on both the “Billboard” 200 and Canadian Albums Chart. “Feed the Machine” peaked at fifth place on the Canadian Albums Chart and topped the “Billboard” Top Rock Albums chart.

6. Likewise, Nickelback has amassed quite the collection of awards in spite of criticism. The quartet has won 12 Juno Awards, two American Music Awards, six Billboard Music Awards and seven Much Music Video Awards. They’ve been nominated for six Grammys, most recently Best Hard Rock Performance for “Burn It to the Ground” from 2008’s “Dark Horse,” but have yet to take home a golden gramophone.

7. Nickelback doesn’t care that you hate them. Although members of the band told Toronto’s National Post in 2014 that the hate directed toward the band has forced them to grow a thick skin, Kroeger said it’s done more good than harm.

“Somebody sent me something recently (headlined) ‘Eight Reasons It’s Time To Stop Hating on Nickelback,’ ” he said. “But I don’t think that all the haters and the critics know how many favours that they’ve done for us. Because otherwise we would just be this just whatever band. And now we’re this controversial band. Everyone’s like ‘I hate them’ or ‘I love them’ — whatever it is, people are talking about us.”
