Locally: Spokane Junior Rifle Club’s Gold team qualifies for nationals

The Spokane Junior Rifle Club will be sending its Gold team to the U.S. Army Junior National Air Rifle Championships Feb. 1-3, 2018, in Fort Benning, Georgia, after the quintet qualified by placing 12th nationally during sectional matches that wound up Dec. 17.

Cassidy Wilson, 17, who is homeschooled; Taylor Christian, 15, Spokane Valley Tech; Mason Maystrovich, 16, Northwest Christian; Zach Pearsall, 16, Oasis; and Ben Tafoya, 15, St. Aloysius combined to shoot 2,262 to finish first in the sectional and earn a spot in the nationals.

Wilson shot 576, Christian 574 and Maystrovich 572 for a 1-2-3 finish for the SJRC in the sectional match in Walla Walla. Pearsall (seventh) shot 540 and Tafoya (10th) 517. Competitors took 60 shots from 10 meters from a standing position.

Wilson placed 47th individually nationally, Christian 56th and Maystrovich 69th. The top 30 individuals and top 30 teams from sectionals nationwide earned invitations to Fort Benning. The leading team score nationally was 2,349. Top individual score was 597.

SJRC had 11 of the 17 individuals in Walla Walla. Its Silver team shot 1,874 to place third in a three-team field.
