Fagan shows courage

It is unusual for most of us, especially these days, to step over to the “other side.” How hard it is to heed a different direction than the steps now tracing my own dug-in tracks. I confess I don’t easily do so.

Thus it is, I want to commend the courage of City Councilman Mike Fagan. On Monday, Kip Hill reported on the 7-0 council vote pre-empting the creation of a “religious registry.” With his fellow/sister council members, Fagan rejected any future ordinance that would target a person on the basis of their religious (or for that matter, non-religious) beliefs.

He did so saying he was “cautiously compassionate.” Good for him. Knowing his wider stand on several issues, I’m guessing that was not an easy vote for him. In this instance, he is a good model for us all. May we all become courageously compassionate, however we get there.
