Gonzaga baseball splits pair at Arizona tournament

Justin Vernia allowed one unearned run over eight innings and Gonzaga (1-1) beat Duke 6-1 in the Zags’ first of two games on Friday in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic Surprise, Arizona.

In the second game, Eli Morgan was roughed up for six earned runs in six innings and Indiana topped Gonzaga 12-3.

Vernia (W, 1-0) gave up three hits and one walk, striking out four in the morning game. He threw 104 pitches, 71 for strikes. Jeff Bohling went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Justin Jacobs and Gunnar Schubert added a pair of hits apiece.

In the afternoon game, Morgan (L, 0-1) cruised through the third, then Indiana pushed two runs across in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Morgan gave up eight hits, struck out seven and walked two. The Hoosiers put up four runs in the seventh against a pair of releivers.

Sam Brown and Schubert had a pair of hits apiece against Indiana.
