Council vote heartening

We now seem to be entering an unfolding nightmare of the Trump presidency. Already people feel deluged by a never-ending flood of executive orders that cause national damage and despair and widespread resistance demonstrations all over the country. None other than Gen. Colin Powell, a Republican, has called Trump a “national disgrace” and did not vote for him. Even his supporters are now having second thoughts about him.

So it was heartening for me to be at Spokane City Hall with a standing-room-only crowd and hear speaker after speaker condemn Trump’s latest brainstorm of banning refugees from entering the country and even people with valid visas and green cards from seven majority Muslim nations.

Finally, the Spokane City Council by a unanimous vote passed an emergency ordinance that would prohibit Spokane city employees, including police, from assisting or implementing the creation of a registry based on religious preference. It made me proud to be an American.
