Women’s Top 25 roundup: Sophie Cunningham’s late layup sends Missouri past No. 6 South Carolina

Sophie Cunningham made a layup with 0.6 seconds to give Missouri a 62-60 comeback victory over No. 6 South Carolina on Sunday in Columbia, Missouri.

Cunningham had 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting to help the Tigers (19-9, 9-5 Southeastern Conference) win their third straight. They beat the Gamecocks (22-4, 12-2) for the second time since joining the conference.

Sierra Michaelis added 11 points, and Cierra Porter had 10 for Missouri. The Tigers trailed 48-44 after three quarters.

A’ja Wilson had 23 points on 9-of-11 shooting to lead South Carolina, and Allisha Gray added 10 points. The Gamecocks lost for the second time in three games, with the other setback coming at No. 1 UConn.

(9) Washington 87, USC 74: Kelsey Plum scored 35 points to move into second place on the NCAA’s career scoring list and helped the Huskies (25-4, 13-3 Pac-12) beat the Trojans (14-13, 5-11) in Los Angeles.

Plum needed just three points to tie former Baylor star Brittney Griner on the list, and she hit a 3-pointer with 3:35 left in the first quarter to tie for second. Her free throw with 2:04 left in the first lifted her to second place behind former Missouri State star Jackie Stiles.

Stiles had 3,393 points, and Plum has 3,315.

Chantel Osahor had 16 points and 12 rebounds and became Washington’s career rebounding leader, finishing the game with 1,150.

Plum had 20 points in the second quarter as Washington opened a 54-35 lead. She scored 39 points two days earlier in a loss to UCLA, giving her 74 points in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Minyon Moore led USC with 20 points.

(3) Mississippi State 72, (23) Texas A&M 67: Victoria Vivians scored 25 points and the Bulldogs (27-1, 13-1 Southeastern Conference) avoided an upset and beat the Aggies (19-8, 9-5) in College Station, Texas.

The Aggies led by seven points in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs charged back, highlighted by Teaira McCowan’s two field goals in the last 1:17. McCowan had 16 points for the Bulldogs. Danni Williams led the Aggies with 23 points.

(7) Notre Dame 85, (21) Syracuse 80: Brianna Turner scored a career-high 31 points, Marina Mabrey added 22, and the Fighting Irish (24-3, 12-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) rallied past the Orange (18-9, 9-5) in Syracuse, New York.

Notre Dame has beaten Syracuse 16 straight times. Syracuse had won 18 straight games at home, and even though the Orange set a school attendance record of 11,021 for the big game, the Irish had too much at the end.

Brittney Sykes and Alexis Peterson each had 19 points for Syracuse.

(10) Stanford 72, California 54: Alanna Smith had 17 points and eight rebounds and the Cardinal (24-4, 14-2 Pac-12) beat the Golden Bears (17-11, 5-11) in Stanford, California, to complete a season sweep.

Brittany McPhee added 16 points for the Cardinal. They have won 11 of their last 12 heading into a Friday night showdown at Oregon State.

Kristine Anigwe scored 12 points for the Bears.

(11) Oregon State 63, Utah 49: Sydney Weise scored 14 points, including four 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals in the Beavers’ (25-3, 14-2 Pac-12) victory over the Utes (15-12, 4-12) in Salt Lake City.

Mikayla Pivec also had 14 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, for Oregon State. Emily Potter led Utah with 17 points.

(13) Duke 83, (16) Miami 70: Lexie Brown scored 10 of her 28 points in the decisive third quarter, and Rebecca Greenwell had 22 points, a season-high 13 rebounds and four assists as the Blue Devils (24-4, 12-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Hurricanes (19-7, 8-6) in Durham, North Carolina.

Brown made 8 of 10 from the field, including all four of her 3-pointers, and 8 of 8 free throws. Duke won its seventh straight and improved to 16-0 at home.

Adrienne Motley led Miami with 23 points.

(14) Louisville 87, North Carolina 57: Asia Durr scored 28 points to help the Cardinals (23-6, 10-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) rout the Tar Heels (14-13, 3-11) in Louisville, Kentucky.

Myisha Hines-Allen added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Louisville. Hines-Allen made a layup and then a jumper to start a 12-2 run to close the first half, and her jumper with 10 seconds left made it 34-21 at the break.

Paris Kea had 26 points for North Carolina.

Wake Forest 89, (15) N.C. State 77:

RALIEGH, N.C. (AP) – Elisa Penna scored 21 points and the Demon Deacons (15-12, 6-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Wolfpack (20-7, 10-4) for their first victory over a ranked team since March 2015.

Amber Campbell added 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting for Wake Forest.

Miah Spencer had 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wolfpack.

Marquette 96, (17) DePaul 81: Danielle King had a career-high 28 points on 11-of-13 shooting to lead the Golden Eagles (20-7, 11-5 Big East) past the Blue Demons (22-6, 14-2) in Milwaukee.

King, whose previous career best of 27 points came in Marquette’s 102-101 overtime win over the Blue Demons on Jan. 21, added five rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

Natisha Hiedeman and Erika Davenport each scored 19 points for Marquette. Brooke Schulte had 26 points and 10 rebounds for DePaul.

(18) UCLA 67, Washington State 48: Monique Billings tied a school single-game record with 25 rebounds and scored 12 points to help the Bruins (20-7, 11-5 Pac-12) beat the Cougars (10-17, 5-11) in Los Angeles for their 30th straight home victory over Washington State.

Kennedy Burke added 17 points for UCLA. The Bruins have won 27 straight home games. Calla Hailey scored 10 points for Washington State.

Michigan State 86, No. 20 Michigan 68: Tori Jankoska made five 3-pointers in setting a single-season school record and scored 28 points to lead the Spartans (18-9, 8-6 Big Ten) over the Wolverines (21-7, 10-4) before a record sellout crowd of 12,707 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Jankoska’s five 3-pointers gave her 297 in her career, breaking the mark of 294 set by Lindsay Bowen (2002-06). Branndais Agee and Taya Reimer added 15 points each for the Spartans, who handed the Wolverines their only loss in 14 games at Crisler Center this season.

Hallie Thome had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Wolverines.

Temple 77, (22) South Florida 71: Feyonda Fitzgerald scored 23 points and Donnaizha Fountain had 22 as the Owls (21-5, 11-2 American Athletic) topped the Bulls (20-6, 9-4) in Tampa, Florida.

Maria Jespersen’s 3-point play with 2:46 remaining gave South Florida the lead, but Fitzgerald and Fountain answered with 12 straight points.

Alliya Butts added 13 points for Temple.

(25) Drake 86, Loyola-Chicago 42: Lizzy Wendell had 19 points seven assists and the Bulldogs (22-4, 15-0 Missouri Valley) beat the Ramblers (2-23, 1-13) in Chicago and won their 16th straight to tie the school record set in 1997.

Wendell rebounded after having her nation-leading string of 102 games with at least 10 points end with a five-point effort in a victory over Indiana State on Friday night.

Sammie Bachrodt added 17 points for Drake. Katie Salmon scored 14 points for Loyola.
