Whitworth pounds Redlands on diamond

Joel Condreay went 5 for 6 – all singles – with two runs batted in and two runs scored and Ryan Bird and Nicholas Nerud each had three hits and three RBIs to power the Whitworth Pirates (6-1) to a 12-3 victory over Redlands (3-6) in nonconference action in Redlands, California.

Brady Simmelink (1-0) picked up the win for the Pirates with five innings of shutout relief. He allowed just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. Tim Bever started for the Whits. He surrendered three runs in four innings on four hits and a walk.

Redlands jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, but the Pirates scored twice in the top of the third inning and took control of the game with a four-run top of the sixth. In the big inning, the Whits tied the game on an RBI single by Matthew Nelson and took the lead for good on a run-scoring single by Bird.
