Terrorism not ‘Muslim-specific’

Regarding Rosemary Schofhauser’s Feb. 12 letter (“Remember our history”) in which she invites citizens to “Remember Fort Hood, Boston, San Bernardino and the Twin Towers.” While those horrific events must never be forgotten, we also need to remember Timothy McVeigh’s bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, Dylann Roof’s cold-blooded murder of black churchgoers and our own Kevin Harpham’s attempted bombing of the MLK Day parade.

Since 9/11, nearly twice as many people have been killed by white supremacists, anti-government fanatics and other non-Muslim extremists than have been killed by those claiming a jihadist motive, according to a 2015 New York Times article.

Approaching terrorism in America as a “Muslim-specific” problem is like putting out a house fire by hosing down the garage.
