A person was killed in a one-car crash on westbound Interstate 90 near the Pines exit Friday evening.

The crash was reported shortly after 5:30 p.m., and Spokane Valley Fire Department crews were called to extricate the driver from the car. It appears the driver lost control and hit the center divider, then careened back across the freeway and smashed into a bridge abutment, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Jeff Sevigney.

There was only one person in the car, and as of 7 p.m. crews were still working to remove the driver from the vehicle, Sevigney said.

The freeway was partially blocked for several hours.
