Nelson Cruz homers in Mariners’ spring training opener

Nelson Cruz hit a three-run homer in the first and the Seattle Mariners finished with 17 hits in 13-3 victory over the San Diego Padres in the spring training opener for both teams in Peoria, Arizona.

Mariners starter Ariel Miranda, fighting for a rotation spot, gave up one hit over two innings with a strikeout.

First baseman Dan Vogelbach had two hits for the Mariners and Guillermo Heredia was 3 for 3 with three RBIs. Newly-acquired shortstop Jean Segura went 1 for 2 with a double in his first at-bat in a Seattle uniform.

San Diego’s Hunter Renfroe drove in Wil Myers with an RBI double in the third inning and Travis Jankowski hit a two-run homer.
