Fairchild Airman Capt. Daniel Normandin, 92nd Medical Operations Squadron, lost his wife Melissa Kelly Normandin, 45, and his son, Jacob Michael Normandin, 14, when the pickup they were in was hit by a BNSF train on Saturday, near Medical Lake.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner identified the two victims late Monday.

The pickup was southbound shortly before 9:40 a.m. when it collided with the westbound train at the Brooks Road crossing south of West McFarlane Road, according to a news release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

“The 92nd Medical Operations Squadron and the entire 92nd Medical Group are hurting deeply for the Normandin family,” Lt. Col. Cory Middel said in a statement. “However, the outpouring of concern from across Fairchild and the local community is inspiring encouragement and hope. The squadron stands ready to walk alongside the family through the long road ahead.”

The accident is under investigation by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and BNSF.
